The Greek Demeter and the Roman Ceres are largely identical, also because we don’t have much information on the latter’s cult in Rome. Sister of Zeus/Jupiter, goddess of maternity (“Demeter” means “Mother Goddess”) summer, plants, and agriculture (from “Ceres” comes the word “cereal”), she was the mother of Persephone/Proserpina, the embodiment of spring and also queen of the dead. Demeter’s pain for losing her daughter brings winter to the earth, and her joy for finding her again brings a new spring. In her long pilgrimage to find her child, the goddess taught mortals the arts of agriculture and nearly made Prince Triptolemus immortal. To celebrate her, the most important festivals in Greece were the Eleusinian Mysteries, and in Rome the Cerealia, that were kept in April.
